Job Title: Snowmaker

Department: Mountain Operations (Reports to Snowmaking Team Leader/Supervisor)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary

The Snowmaker is a crucial member of the Mountain Operations team at Mount Kato, responsible for the efficient and safe production of high-quality snow. This position operates and maintains snowmaking equipment, monitors snow conditions, and works to ensure optimal slope conditions for skiing and snowboarding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Snowmaking Operations:

  • Operate various components of the snowmaking system, including pumps, compressors, pipes, hydrants, and snow guns (manual and automated).

  • Monitor weather conditions, snow quality, and terrain conditions.

  • Adjust snow gun settings to optimize snow quality and production.

  • Ensure efficient and effective water usage.

  • Assist in troubleshooting operational issues with the snowmaking system.

  • Maintenance and Repair:

  • Perform routine maintenance on snowmaking equipment, including inspections, lubrication, and minor repairs.

  • Report any equipment malfunctions or needed repairs to the Snowmaking Team Leader/Supervisor.

  • Assist in the repair and overhaul of snowmaking equipment as needed.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

  • Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations, including OSHA guidelines and Mount Kato safety protocols.

  • Identify and report potential hazards in the work area.

  • Operate equipment safely and follow all safety procedures.

  • Participate in safety meetings and training sessions.

  • Communication and Coordination:

  • Communicate effectively with the Snowmaking Team Leader/Supervisor and other team members.

  • Use radio communication to coordinate snowmaking activities.

  • Work closely with other Mountain Operations departments, such as Lift Operations and Grooming.

    Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Previous experience in snowmaking operations at a ski resort preferred.

  • Knowledge of snowmaking systems, equipment, and techniques is a plus.

  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including cold, snow, and high winds.

  • Physical stamina and ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying, and working in confined spaces.

  • Ability to work at heights and on uneven terrain.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Mechanical aptitude is a plus.

  • Ability to use radio communication and other relevant technology.

    Physical Demands

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various and often adverse weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, wind, and high altitude.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy equipment (up to 50 pounds), shoveling snow, and working in confined spaces.

  • Ability to walk, stand, and climb on uneven terrain for long durations.

  • Ability to work at heights.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

    Work Environment

  • Primarily an outdoor work environment in a mountain setting.

  • Exposure to loud noises from machinery and equipment.

  • Exposure to potentially hazardous conditions, including working with high-pressure water systems, heavy machinery, and in inclement weather.

  • May require working extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak season.
