Snowmaking Team Leader

Department: Mountain Operations (Reports to Mountain Manager)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary

The Snowmaking Team Leader is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and optimization of the snowmaking system at Mount Kato. This position leads a crew of Snowmakers in producing high-quality snow efficiently and safely, ensuring optimal slope conditions for skiing and snowboarding. The Snowmaking Team Leader plays a key role in achieving Mount Kato’s snow production goals, working closely with the Snowmaking Supervisor and other Mountain Operations departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise a crew of Snowmakers, providing daily work assignments, training, and guidance.

  • Ensure that all crew members adhere to safety procedures and operating protocols.

  • Monitor crew performance and provide feedback to the Mountain Operations Manager.

  • Assist in the training of new Snowmakers.

  • Maintain accurate records of crew activities, including hours worked, tasks completed, and any issues encountered.

  • Snowmaking Operations:

  • Operate and maintain all components of the snowmaking system, including pumps, compressors, pipes, hydrants, and snow guns (manual and automated).

  • Monitor weather conditions, snow quality, and terrain conditions to make informed decisions about snow production.

  • Adjust snow gun settings to optimize snow quality and production based on weather conditions and terrain requirements.

  • Ensure efficient and effective water usage throughout the snowmaking process.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues with the snowmaking system.

  • Maintenance and Repair:

  • Perform routine maintenance on snowmaking equipment, including inspections, lubrication, and minor repairs.

  • Identify and report any equipment malfunctions or needed repairs to the Mountain Operations Manager.

  • Assist in the repair and overhaul of snowmaking equipment during both on-season and off-season periods.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment in pumphouses, work areas, and equipment storage areas.

  • Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations, including OSHA guidelines and Mount Kato safety protocols.

  • Identify and mitigate potential hazards in the work area.

  • Ensure that all crew members are properly trained in equipment operation, safety procedures, and emergency response.

  • Participate in safety meetings and training sessions.

  • Communication and Coordination:

  • Communicate effectively with the Snowmaking Supervisor, Lift Operations, Grooming, and other departments to coordinate snowmaking activities.

  • Provide regular updates to the Snowmaking Supervisor on snow production progress, equipment status, and any operational issues.

  • Use radio communication effectively to coordinate with crew members and other departments.

    Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in snowmaking operations at a ski resort.

  • Strong knowledge of snowmaking systems, equipment, and techniques.

  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot various types of snow guns and related equipment.

  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including cold, snow, and high winds.

  • Physical stamina and ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying, and working in confined spaces.

  • Ability to work at heights and on uneven terrain.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic maintenance and repairs on equipment.

  • Proficiency in using radio communication and other relevant technology.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience in a snowmaking operation.

  • Certification or training in snowmaking equipment operation and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of water management and energy efficiency in snowmaking.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises a crew of Snowmakers.

    Physical Demands

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various and often adverse weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, wind, and high altitude.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy equipment (up to 50 pounds), shoveling snow, and working in confined spaces.

  • Ability to walk, stand, and climb on uneven terrain for long durations.

  • Ability to work at heights.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

    Work Environment

  • Primarily an outdoor work environment in a mountain setting.

  • Exposure to loud noises from machinery and equipment.

  • Exposure to potentially hazardous conditions, including working with high-pressure water systems, heavy machinery, and in inclement weather.

  • May require working extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak season.
