Groomer Operator

Job Title: Groomer Operator

Summary

The Groomer Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of snow grooming equipment at Mount Kato. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing slope conditions, ensuring a high-quality experience for skiers and snowboarders. The Groomer Operator works closely with the Mountain Operations Manager and other Mountain Operations personnel to achieve optimal snow surfaces and terrain features.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Equipment Operation:

  • Operate snow grooming machines, including but not limited to:

  • Pisten Bully or similar tracked vehicles

  • Tillers and compactors

  • Other specialized grooming attachments

  • Perform pre-operational checks on equipment, including fluid levels, mechanical components, and safety systems.

  • Operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to established procedures and safety guidelines.

  • Maneuver grooming machines over various terrain, including steep slopes, uneven surfaces, and confined areas.

  • Grooming Techniques:

  • Execute grooming patterns and techniques as directed by the Grooming Supervisor to achieve desired snow conditions, such as:

  • Smoothing and compacting snow

  • Creating corduroy patterns

  • Breaking up ice and hardpack

  • Building and maintaining terrain park features

  • Distributing snow to cover thin areas

  • Adapt grooming techniques to varying snow conditions, including powder, packed snow, and ice.

  • Operate equipment to create and maintain terrain park features, such as jumps, rails, and halfpipes.

  • Communication and Coordination:

  • Communicate effectively with the Grooming Supervisor and other team members using radio equipment.

  • Coordinate grooming activities with other departments, such as Ski Patrol and Lift Operations.

  • Report any equipment malfunctions, hazardous conditions, or changes in snow conditions to the Grooming Supervisor.

  • Safety and Maintenance:

  • Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations, including OSHA guidelines and Mount Kato safety protocols.

  • Perform routine maintenance on grooming equipment, including:

  • Cleaning

  • Lubrication

  • Basic adjustments

  • Report any equipment problems or needed repairs to the Groomer Mechanic.

  • Participate in safety meetings and training sessions.

  • Documentation:

  • Complete daily equipment logs and reports, documenting grooming activities, snow conditions, and any equipment issues.

  • Maintain accurate records of hours worked and tasks completed.

    Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience operating heavy equipment, preferably in a similar environment (e.g., construction, agriculture).

  • Ability to learn and operate complex snow grooming machinery.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, and high winds.

  • Physical stamina and ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating snow grooming equipment.

  • Basic knowledge of snow science and meteorology.

  • Welding or fabrication skills.

    Physical Demands

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various and often adverse weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, wind, and high altitude.

  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods while operating machinery.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing in and out of equipment, and working in confined spaces.

  • Ability to use radio communication equipment in noisy environments.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

    Work Environment

  • Primarily an outdoor work environment in a mountain setting.

  • Exposure to loud noises from machinery and equipment.

  • Exposure to potentially hazardous conditions, including working with heavy machinery, hydraulic systems, and in inclement weather.

  • May require working extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak season.
