Groomer Mechanic

Job Title: Groomer Mechanic

Department: Mountain Operations

Summary

The Groomer Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overall upkeep of Mount Kato’s fleet of snow grooming equipment. This position ensures that all grooming machines are in optimal operating condition to provide a safe and high-quality skiing and snowboarding experience for our guests. The Groomer Mechanic works closely with the Mountain Operations Manager and other Mountain Operations staff to maintain the highest standards of slope conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preventative Maintenance:

  • Perform scheduled maintenance on all snow grooming equipment, including but not limited to:

  • Inspections

  • Lubrication

  • Fluid changes (oil, hydraulic)

  • Track adjustments

  • Blade maintenance

  • Engine and transmission servicing

  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repairs performed.

  • Adhere to preventative maintenance schedules and procedures.

  • Repair and Troubleshooting:

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic problems on grooming equipment.

  • Perform repairs on a variety of systems, including:

  • Engines (diesel)

  • Transmissions

  • Hydraulic systems

  • Electrical systems

  • Computerized control systems

  • Replace damaged or worn parts.

  • Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication as needed.

  • Equipment Operation:

  • Operate snow grooming machines to move them within the maintenance facility and around the resort as needed.

  • Perform basic grooming tasks as required for training or equipment testing purposes.

  • Inventory Management:

  • Maintain an inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.

  • Order parts and supplies as needed, following established procedures.

  • Ensure that the workshop and parts storage areas are clean, organized, and safe.

  • Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations, including OSHA guidelines and Mount Kato safety protocols.

  • Identify and report any unsafe conditions or hazards.

  • Operate equipment safely and follow all safety procedures.

  • Participate in safety meetings and training sessions.

  • Communication and Coordination:

  • Communicate effectively with the Grooming Supervisor and other Mountain Operations staff.

  • Provide regular updates on equipment status and repair progress.

  • Work closely with groomer operators to understand equipment issues and ensure their needs are met.

    Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a mechanic, preferably with heavy equipment or diesel engines.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.

  • Welding and fabrication skills.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.

  • Ability to use diagnostic tools and equipment.

  • Physical stamina and ability to perform physically demanding tasks.

  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including cold, snow, and high winds.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Valid driver’s license.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with snow grooming equipment.

  • Certification in diesel engine repair or hydraulics.

  • Familiarity with computer-controlled systems.

    Physical Demands

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various and often adverse weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, wind, and high altitude.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy equipment (up to 75 pounds), bending, stooping, climbing, and working in confined spaces.

  • Ability to work with tools and equipment for extended periods.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

    Work Environment

  • Primarily an outdoor work environment in a mountain setting.

  • Exposure to loud noises from machinery and equipment.

  • Exposure to potentially hazardous conditions, including working with heavy machinery, hydraulic systems, and in inclement weather.

  • May require working extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak season.
