Mountain Operations Manager

Summary

The Mountain Operations Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective management of all on-mountain operations at Mount Kato. This position oversees the planning, execution, and maintenance of all mountain activities, ensuring exceptional guest experiences, maximizing operational efficiency, and adhering to industry best practices and safety standards, including those set by the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Overall Mountain Operations Management:

  • Directly manage and supervise the following departments: Snowmaking, Lift Operations, Grooming, and Terrain Parks.

  • Coordinate the activities of various departments to ensure seamless and efficient mountain operations.

  • Develop and implement operational plans, policies, and procedures in accordance with NSAA guidelines and industry best practices.

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of mountain operations, identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including those related to lift safety, avalanche safety, and environmental protection.

  • Lift Operations:

  • Oversee the safe and efficient operation of all ski lifts, ensuring adherence to ANSI B77.1 standards and manufacturer specifications.

  • Manage lift maintenance programs, including preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs.

  • Develop and implement lift evacuation plans and procedures, and conduct regular drills.

  • Supervise lift personnel, providing training, scheduling, and performance management.

  • Snowmaking and Grooming:

  • Direct the planning and execution of snowmaking operations to ensure optimal snow conditions and maximize terrain availability.

  • Manage snowmaking systems, including equipment maintenance, water usage, and energy efficiency.

  • Oversee the grooming department, ensuring the preparation of slopes to the highest standards of quality and safety.

  • Coordinate snowmaking and grooming activities to optimize terrain and snow conditions.

  • Budgeting and Resource Management:

  • Develop and manage the Mountain Operations budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and efficient allocation of resources.

  • Monitor expenses, track performance metrics, and provide regular reports on budget status.

  • Manage the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of all Mountain Operations equipment and supplies.

  • Guest Experience and Communication:

  • Work closely with other departments, such as Guest Services and Marketing, to ensure a seamless and positive guest experience.

  • Communicate effectively with guests regarding mountain conditions, trail closures, and safety information.

  • Address guest inquiries and resolve any issues related to mountain operations.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as Outdoor Recreation Management, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in mountain operations at a ski resort, with at least 5 years in a management role.

  • Strong knowledge of ski resort operations, including lift operations, snowmaking, grooming, and ski patrol.

  • Thorough understanding of NSAA guidelines, ANSI B77.1 standards, and other relevant industry regulations.

  • Proven leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a large and diverse team.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in using computer systems and software relevant to mountain operations.

  • Advanced skiing/snowboarding skills.

  • Valid driver’s license.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises the Snowmaking Supervisor, Lift Maintenance Technicians, Lift Operations Manager, Groomers, Terrain Parks Manager, and Facilities Maintenance Team.

    Physical Demands

  • Ability to work outdoors in various and often adverse weather conditions, including cold, snow, wind, and high altitude.

  • Ability to ski/snowboard for extended periods over challenging terrain.

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment and perform physically demanding tasks.

  • Ability to communicate effectively using radio equipment in noisy environments.

    Work Environment

  • Combination of office and outdoor work environment in a mountain setting.

  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including cold, snow, and wind.

  • May require working extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak season.
