Summary

The Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety programs to ensure the safety and well-being of Mount Kato staff, guests, and volunteers. This position oversees all aspects of safety, including employee safety, safety training, and the operations of both the full-time and Volunteer Ski Patrols. The Safety Officer plays a critical role in fostering a safety-conscious culture and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Safety Program Development and Management:

• Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive written safety programs, policies, and procedures for all Mount Kato operations, including but not limited to: lift operations, snowmaking, grooming, terrain parks, food and beverage, and maintenance.

• Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of all facilities and operations to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.

• Analyze accident and incident data to identify trends, develop corrective actions, and implement preventative measures.

• Manage the Worker’s Compensation program, including claims management, return-to-work programs, and cost containment strategies.

• Oversee the development and implementation of emergency action plans (EAPs) for various scenarios, including medical emergencies, lift evacuations, and severe weather events.

• Safety Training and Education:

• Develop and deliver safety training programs for all employees, volunteers, and contractors, including new hire orientation, ongoing training, and specialized training for specific departments and tasks.

• Maintain accurate records of all safety training activities.

• Ensure that all staff and volunteers are properly trained in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment.

• Develop and implement guest safety education programs and initiatives.

• Ski Patrol Operations:

• Directly manage the operations of both the full-time and Volunteer Ski Patrols, ensuring the provision of high-quality emergency medical care, on-mountain safety, and guest service.

• Develop and maintain Ski Patrol protocols, procedures, and training programs, ensuring alignment with National Ski Patrol (NSP) standards and best practices.

• Coordinate Ski Patrol activities with other departments, including lift operations, snowmaking, and guest services.

• Manage the recruitment, training, and scheduling of Volunteer Ski Patrol members.

• Ensure that Ski Patrol personnel are properly equipped and trained in advanced first aid, CPR, avalanche awareness (if applicable), and other necessary skills.

• Oversee the maintenance and inventory of Ski Patrol equipment and supplies.

• Compliance and Regulatory Affairs:

• Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA standards, ANSI standards, and any other relevant industry-specific regulations.

• Stay up-to-date on changes in safety regulations and best practices, and implement necessary updates to safety programs and procedures.

• Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and insurance providers.

• Manage required reporting.

• Risk Management:

• Identify and assess potential risks to guests, employees, and the organization.

• Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified risks.

• Work with insurance providers to manage claims and minimize losses.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Risk Management, or a related field preferred.

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in safety management, preferably in the ski industry or a related field.

• Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar designation preferred.

• Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, and other applicable safety regulations.

• Advanced first aid, CPR, and other relevant certifications (e.g., Outdoor Emergency Care) required.

• Experience in managing and training personnel, including volunteer organizations.

• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.

• Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

• Skiing/snowboarding proficiency preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Directly supervises the full-time Ski Patrol Supervisor and indirectly supervises all Ski Patrol personnel (full-time and volunteer).

• May supervise other safety-related staff, depending on the organizational structure.

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

• Ability to stand, walk, and ski/snowboard for extended periods.

• Ability to work in various weather conditions, including cold, snow, and wind.

• Visual acuity to assess hazards and monitor operations.

• Manual dexterity to operate equipment and perform tasks.

• Combination of office and outdoor work environment.

• Exposure to various weather conditions, including cold, snow, and wind.

• Exposure to potentially hazardous conditions, including but not limited to: working at heights, operating machinery, and exposure to chemicals.
